Perry, Southern Gateway to Mark Twain Lake

Perry is a small, rural community in Northeast Missouri reflective of all the charm and friendliness associated with the rural Midwest. Although it has a population of 700, Perry provides services equal to those found in much larger communities, with a healthy mix of retail, commercial, and industrial businesses. Only minutes from Mark Twain Lake in Northeast Missouri, Perry is regarded as the Southern Gateway to the lake. Each year, nearly 2 million people visit the lake recreation areas to camp, boat, fish, and enjoy the endless variety of outdoor activities.

Perry has adapted to take advantage of the nearby 18,600 acre lake. Perry’s downtown has been restored to its former glory with many of the buildings now housing antique and specialty, and resale shops. Several downtown buildings are over 100 years old, with the oldest being built in 1887. Most downtown shops are open Tuesday-Sunday through the tourist season.

Perry also serves those who are enjoying a campground at Mark Twain Lake. Perry offers a grocery store, the lake’s largest sporting goods store, restaurants, bait and tackle, and convenience stores.

In 2016, Perry celebrated its 150th birthday with a grand celebration. Thousands enjoyed the sesquicentennial event. The event featured the Bigfoot Monster Truck, Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile, a 150 entry parade, large Fireworks display and historic carousel rides.

Perry is also nearby to the area’s most famous citizen, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). The birthplace shrine is located just 10 minutes west of Perry in nearby Florida at Mark Twain State Park. The museum exhibits feature the original manuscript of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain’s boyhood home is located in nearby Hannibal (30 minutes from Perry) and is a must see!
